Preschooler and Beyond Tips

Dealing with preschoolers is both difficult and fun. Your preschooler has learned to communicate verbally and this makes it much easier for you to understand each other. Nevertheless, there will be times when your preschooler wants to exert his will and tantrums are par for the course. Warnings and timeouts work well to let your preschooler know you wil not tolerate unacceptable behavior. Be sure to follow through on your word!

Your preschooler will likely continue with afternoon naps (maybe only 1 1/2 to 2 hours long). Sleep is still important at this age and bedtime should still be no later than 8:00 to 8:30. As your preschooler learns new skills and begins anticipating events (birthday parties, trips to the zoo, etc.) you may find him waking up earlier than you would like on occasion. Try to understand that your preschooler is excited about the world and this is normal. However, limits must be set to ensure your preschooler is getting enough sleep. Sending them to bed later to encourage a later wake up does not always work. Try telling your preschooler that sleep is very important and he or she needs to stay in bed until a certain time. If your preschooler can recognize numbers try setting up a digital clock in his room and telling him that he should not come out until a designated time (such as 7:00).

Although it is not always easy to manage, try spending as much fun time with your preschooler as you can. Reading, drawing, crafts, and outdoor activities (such as kicking a ball or a trip to the local playground) go a long way in helping your child learn about the world and is effective in creating a bond between you. It will take a lot of energy to keep up with the demands of a preschooler, so treat yourself well. Proper eating habits not only help you feel better equipped to handle day to day requirements, it also shows your preschooler the importance of eating well. Telling them to eat their carrots will not work as well if you do not eat yours!

If you are concerned about your preschooler's development, there are many great resources to assist you.
